Internships

Internships at Vermont Handworks are flexible, work-exchange opportunities for anyone interested in extended study. Interns contribute one to three days per week in exchange for an equal amount of structured learning time: six hours of work earns six hours of learning. Learning hours may be used to join a scheduled class or to pursue an area of interest with Jolynn, Eric, or a combination of both.

Interns contribute to a range of projects depending on their interests, skills, and our needs. Interns can alternate work/learning time or accumulate working hours to apply toward a longer project or several different learning opportunities. The work varies and reflects what is happening at Vermont Handworks during the season, allowing interns to build diverse skills and knowledge while earning work hours. For example, past interns have:

• created signage and marketing materials

• worked at our informational booth at the Shelburne Farmers Market

• planted trees

• organized outbuildings

• planted and maintained willow beds

• created samples for jewelry and enamel classes

• unloaded, processed, and prepared wood for storage

• milled material for upcoming woodworking classes

There is a rolling deadline, and internships typically last 3 to 4 months. The schedule and timeframe of each internship are arranged on a case-by-case basis. Internship availability changes throughout the year.

To inquire about an internship, email us at vermonthandworks@gmail.com with a brief general introduction, your availability, your skills or interests, and what you hope to learn. You are welcome to include a résumé, portfolio, and/or a link to your work, but these are not required.

Those interested in teaching may also participate in different aspects of developing and facilitating a Vermont Handworks class, including curriculum development, preparing handouts and samples, performing demos, observing instruction, and assisting during class.

Eligibility is determined by how the students’ goals, availability, and experience align with the internship framework. Anyone interested in expanding their craft skill set, gaining experience in willow basketry, chairmaking, jewelry, metalsmithing, or enameling is encouraged to apply. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
