Green Woodworking + Natural Materials Classes

Many classes at Vermont Handworks fall under the umbrella of green woodworking. Green woodworking projects often start by splitting parts from a freshly felled log and doing some or all of the work before the material loses its moisture, taking advantage of the properties of wet or “green” material. It’s a way of woodworking which emphasizes selecting and appreciating material for its physical properties instead of its appearance. This allows for the efficient use of simple tools and processes like shaping with the drawknife and bending with steam. From this point of view, many of the craft classes we offer, like chairmaking, spoon carving, basketry, broom tying, bowl carving, and pitchfork making, all have much more in common with each other than with other types of woodworking. The class schedule is updated several times a year; you can stay up to date by signing up for our email list. Beginners are welcome in any class, and all tools are provided.

What to Expect in a Class

You can expect these classes to be quieter and less dusty than in a typical woodshop, leaving more room for conversation or contemplation. There is a strong emphasis on building skills with your hands and eyes, and developing a deep understanding of material properties. Classes range anywhere from a few hours in a single day to multi-week full-time intensives. Class size ranges from 3 to 8 students depending on space, material needs, and project complexity. In any given class, experience levels range from complete beginners to experienced makers, but every class is designed for the beginner to succeed.

Chairmaking is the most in-depth type of woodworking workshop that we offer. Over the course of a week, students work together to each complete their own chair from start to finish. These classes cover the basics in detail: material selection; working from the log vs. boards; kiln use and construction; steam bending; joinery; moisture content; using and sharpening hand tools.
