This seven-day, community oriented workshop, is a deep dive into the fundamentals of green woodworking and Windsor chairmaking. Students will each choose to make one of four related designs: a side chair, arm chair, bar stool, or rocker. These are split and shaved Windsor chairs designed by Curtis Buchanan. Curtis named them ‘democratic chairs’, in part because of the few basic tools needed to build them. They are almost completely shaped with the drawknife, a tool often abandoned in the later stages of the chairmaking process.
Over the first few days students will work together to split, rough out, and steam bend all the parts we need from a freshly felled White Ash log. The second half of the week will be spent drilling, reaming and carving White Pine seats, and assembling the chairs. There will not be time to apply finish durring this class, but resources will be provided for students to complete the process at home.
This class is a lot of work, a lot of fun, and offers a unique opportunity to build skills with the drawknife.
