Enameling is the process of fusing a special kind of powdered glass to metal. In this class, students will design and saw a copper pendant, then apply several thin layers of enamel to both sides. Each layer will be fired in a kiln at approximately 1,450°F or higher, bonding the glass to the copper. Unlike a ceramic kiln firing, an enamel firing takes only a few minutes, allowing us to build and fire several layers during the class.
We will begin by experimenting with loose, intuitive marks on paper using a variety of mark-making techniques. After the pendant has been enameled, we will abrade the smooth glass surface to expose a slight “tooth”—a fine texture that allows graphite to grip the surface. Students will then translate elements from their drawings onto the enamel using different grades and forms of graphite. The work will be fired again to incorporate the graphite drawing into the glass permanently.
Beginners are welcome and will be guided through each step. Students with prior enameling experience may use the class to explore more complex designs or deepen their approach.
