Our surroundings are filled with marks, textures, shapes, and surfaces that often go unnoticed. In this concentrated weekend class, students will begin with a walk around the Vermont Handworks property, observing the landscape and paying attention to the details, forms, and surfaces they encounter.
Back in the studio, students will work through a series of drawing exercises, including drawing from memory with their eyes closed. These drawings are not intended to be representational or refined; instead, they are documents of what was observed and remembered during the walk. Rocks, concrete, and other surfaces may be used to impress texture directly into the metal, while marks and shapes from these drawings can influence the cuff's contour and the pierced openings within the design.
