We grow Belgium Red for its rich red/brown color when dried. It is a vigorous variety in our fields and produces better basketry material when planted in a high density. It is less suitable for stakes/boarders than the purpureas, but does well in many other parts of a basket. Our Belgium Red is from Lakeshore Willows.
The University of Connecticut Checklist for Cultivars of Salix (2015) notes the first published occurrence of ‘Belgian Red’ as a cultivar name in 1980 describing a S. fragilis clone grown in the UK.
