Bleu is one of our favorite varieties for its color as both living and dried material. Excellent growth habit and workability. Our plants came from Vermont Willow Nursery and Lakeshore Willows (Ontario) and we suspect they may actually be slightly different cultivars. The cuttings we offer for sale are only from our Lakeshore Willow plants.
This variety is grown widely for basketry in North America but appears to be of disputed origin. The University of Connecticut Checklist for Cultivars of Salix (2015) notes they found no published reference for ‘bleu’ and so consider it an unestablished name. They point to the Vermont Willow Nursery online catalog which describes it as a “Western European selection…very similar to ‘Purple Dicks’”.
