After Packing Twine, Streamco is the shortest purpurea variety grow, with an average rod hight of 5’ - 6’. Our initial cuttings were from Willowbrook Basket Farm in New York.
The University of Connecticut Checklist for Cultivars of Salix (2015) notes: “ A male close that was cooperatively released by the Natural Resources Conservation Service and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation primarily for stabilizing streambanks in 1975….it suckers and layers producing dense mats that resist erosion.”
We have yet to observe any suckering in our plants, but first year growth does arch back to the ground before turning up and would presumably layer if left for subsequent years. Second year coppices loose this horizontal growth habit produce vertical branchless rods.
